Reflections of a Primatologist
Dr. Sian Evans was born and educated in the United Kingdom. She received a Masters degree in Biological Anthropology from the University of Durham and a Ph.D from Te University of Wales where she studied marmosets and their apparently monogamous lifestyle. She has lived and studied primates in Africa and helped raise orphaned gorillas. She has published on the abilities of apes to recognize themselves in mirrors and their memories for unique events. In her current position as the Managing Director of the DuMond Conservancy for Primates and Tropical Forests in Miami she studies nocturnal owl monkeys and teaches in the Biology Department at Florida International University.
With her encouragement and collaboration, scientists and students have discovered that owl monkeys anoint with millipedes, that they have a unique pattern of food sharing and that family members share a characteristic smelly signature.
The DuMond Conservancy has become an active community based organization and encourages the participation of youth of all abilities in caring for and understanding our closest relatives.
